Pasture-Finished Beef
We will not have any pasture-raised beef available this year. When we had to move from our old farm we sold off all the young calves because we thought we would have to stop farming. We kept five steers that we had at Myron's parents' place in Virginia, and that is the beef we had available last year. At this point we are not sure when we will start raising beef again. We feel that, for some reason, we are not to raise beef for the time being, even though a lot of indicators say we should be. For example, as result of the drought this past year in the US, the mama beef cows were sold off in record numbers because farmers didn't have grass or hay to feed them. Cows were also sold because pasture land was plowed up and planted in corn for ethanol. That brings the beef cow numbers in the US to its lowest level in 56 years! At the same time the world wide demand for beef is increasing.
